- BASEBALL: Hot Bats Help Pius X Over Lincoln High
By Kellan Heavican
Lincoln Pius X used hot bats in top of the first and second inning to break open the scoring book to roll to a 10-2 victory over Lincoln High on Thursday evening at Sherman Field.
With a blustery wind blowing out to center, the Thunderbolts faced two outs with runners at first and second before Brock Wordekemper hit a base hit to center field that brought in Spencer Sheer and Tyler Crouse. Derek Kolbush batted in Wordekemper and Pius led 3-0 after the top of the inning.
Lincoln High pitcher Garret Brockman found himself in another jam in the top of the second after retiring the first two Thunderbolts. After back-to-back singles from Crouse and Micah Hoage, Wordekemper, assisted by the wind, blasted a two-run RBI double to center. Riley Ward turned on a pitch an added to the score as he batted in Wordekemper.
Lincoln High cut the deficit to 6-2 after a lead-off double by Jake Evans in the bottom of the fourth. Wyatt Viveir then tripled to left field that brought in Evans. Joel Matzen hit into a fielders choice that scored Vivier.
The Thunderbolts added 3 more runs in the fifth and one in the seventh. Pius racked up 13 hits but left 11 base runners. Riley Ward was credited with the win for Pius and Brockman suffered the loss.
