03/30/2016 - BASEBALL: Kulhanek Goes The Distance For LSE Victory Over LSW

By Jeff Motz

Noah Kulhanek worked his fastball and got some help at the plate Wednesday afternoon, as Lincoln Southeast held off Lincoln Southwest 7-5 in high school baseball at Sherman Field.

Kulhanek, a senior, went the distance by throwing a complete game six hitter, allowing five runs while striking out five batters.  He got help from his Southeast teammates, including a pivotal third inning.

Nate Trenhaile reached on a Southwest throwing error by shortstop Jared Ladd, but later retired in a rundown between first and second.  Jaxson Johnson then connected on a two-out single, which was followed by a single from Brett Sheppard.  Aidan Bennett drove in Johnson and Sheppard on a two-run double for a 3-1 Southeast lead.

Southwest picked up a run in the fifth when Tyler Burgason doubled and later scored off a ground out by Tucker Catlett.

Southeast then scored four runs in the bottom half of the inning, when Sheppard reached on another throwing error from Ladd.  Crew Charlton singled to right field and brought in a run off a throwing error.  He scored off an infield hit from pinch hitter Jaden Kouba.

Southwest relief pitcher Dawson Linder then walked Garrett Olson and gave up a hit to Kulhanek, which set up Kouba's RBI single.  Nebraska recruit Connor Curry then hit a two-run double to right field for a 7-2 Southeast lead.

In the sixth, the Silver Hawks managed to get three runs after Jared Jesske got his second hit then scored off of Isaiah Peterson's double.  After Max McGuire walked, Burgeson drove in two runs on a single before Southeast held on for the victory in the seventh.

Southwest left hander Michael Dixon took the loss, after going 3 1/3 innings giving up three earned runs on seven hits, while walking three and striking out one.  Linder went one inning, allowing four runs (three of them earned) on four hits and recording one strikeout.

Kulhanek and Bennett each went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Southeast.
