- CLASS D2 BOYS BASKETBALL: Patriots Fly High Past Coyotes
By Kellan Heavican
The Parkview Christian boys basketball team continues to fly through the history books as they won their first-ever state tournament game Thursday morning at the Ed Johnson Gym at Lincoln Northeast.
The Patriots (22-4) captured a 63-39 quarterfinal win over #5 Anselmo-Merna. Parkview will rematch with top-seeded Mead, who won the first meeting 53-40 in the Class D-2 semi-final at 2 pm from the Devaney Sports Center on Friday.
Parkview Christian only held a 21-19 advantage going into the break. Sophomore Tucker Pinyan ignited his team cashing in on one of his three second half triples with 6:43 left in the third quarter.
Henry Tanksley was whistled with two early first-half fouls. He only had nine points at the break. But, in a span of nearly eight minutes, Tanksley scored 15 straight points for the Patriots as they led 35-31 with 7:10 left in the third quarter.
Pinyan, who did not score in the first half, hit back-to-back three’s to put the Patriots up 42-21 with 6:27 to go. Parkview Christian never looked back and cruised into the semi-finals.
Tanksley finished with a game-high 27 and Pinyan had 13. Troy Gilligan led Anselmo-Merna with 22 points, but fouled out early in the fourth quarter.
