- CLASS A GIRLS BASKETBALL: East Survives Double OT, Advances To Final
By Jeff Motz
If the writers of the television show "Survivor" were to take suggestions for new material, they should consult with the Lincoln East girls basketball team.
The Spartans have clawed their way back in their first two tournament games, with the latter going double overtime Friday night in a 57-47 triumph over Millard South in the Class A girls state basketball semifinals at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
East (22-5) now plays Millard West in Saturday's 6:30pm Class A championship, after the Wildcats beat Bellevue West 61-45 in Friday's second semifinal game. The other one came Thursday, when the Spartans rallied back against top-seed South Sioux City to win 64-56.
East had a late 42-40 lead with 1:01 to go when guard Caroline Spethman went down with what appeared to be a concussion. But Millard South guard Haley Koetje hit two free throws with 31 seconds left in regulation. Two close range shot attempts from the Spartans missed as time ran out, leading to overtime.
Koetje scored first to put the Patriots ahead, then Allie Roh hit two free throws to tie the game at 44. Millard South tried to go for the win, but a turnover with three seconds left ultimately led to the second overtime.
From there, East drummed up momentum. Roh scored, then Regan Sankey made her fourth, three-pointer of the game to put the Spartans up 49-44, followed by eight free throws as part of a 13-3 run, four of which game from senior guard Grace Barry.
Sankey led East with 17 points, while Elyssa Jurgens scored 15 and Barry totaled 10 points.
Camille Fowler and Lauren Sanders each scored 11 points to help Millard West, who finishes the year at 23-5.
