By Kellan Heavican
The duo of Mikenzie Delgado and Ashley Cook combined for 21 points to lead Waverly to a 44-39 upset over #4 Gretna Thursday morning in the first round of the Class B State Girls Basketball Tournament at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
No. 4 Waverly will move on to face top-ranked Platteview for the third time this season, as the Trojans won the first to meetings, including a 43-34 win in the B1 district championship last Friday. Tip off is set for 2 pm Friday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
The Vikings (17-6) opened up with a Delgado three-point-play on the first possession of the third quarter, which gave Waverly their largest lead of the game at 35-22. But, Waverly saw its lead disappear.
Gretna cut the Viking lead to two at 39-37 thanks to a Madison Meadows three-point-play with 39 seconds left. The Dragons (17-8) were forced to foul Amanda Cook, but she missed both free throws, but Delgado grabbed the board, which lead to another pair of missed Cook free throws.
Meadows missed a jumper with 14 seconds left and Delgado grabbed her third crucial rebound of the game and sealed the upset with two free throws.
Meadows led Gretna with 19, including 16 in the second half. Ashley Cook scored 13 points for the Vikings.
