- GIRLS B1 DISTRICT BASKETBALL: Trojans Stay Undefeated With 4th Quarter Run
By Jeff Motz
BELLEVUE---Class B No. 1 Platteview was already state tourney bound, win or lose in Friday night's B-1 girls district basketball championship game.
What was at risk was the perfect record and a 12-2 fourth quarter run sparked by ten of Payton Brotzki's game-high 20 points sealed the deal as the Trojans won 43-34 over Waverly at Bellevue East High School.
With four minutes to play, Platteview guard Megan Gillen was fouled on a three-point attempt by Waverly guard Mikenzie Delgado---only hit one of three free throws. On the second miss, Colby Duvel rescued the ball and scored to put the Trojans up 32-29.
A Waverly turnover led to another basket for Platteview from Duvel, then the Vikings got a basket from Delgado with 2:12 to narrow the lead to 34-31. Brotzki took control for the Trojans by converting on a three-point play to extend Platteview's lead to 37-31.
Brotzki added a free throw, while Duvel sank one of two free throws with 35 seconds to play. Brotzki then hit two more charity tosses.
Waverly got a three-pointer from McKenna Hoy with 9 seconds left and Platteview iced the game with two more free throws from Brotzki.
Duvel added 11 points for Platteview, who is 24-0 and the No. 1 seed in the Class B state tournament.
Ashley Cook was the only player in double-figures for Waverly, with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
