- BOYS C1 SUBDISTRICT BASKETBALL: Warriors Outlast Eagles In Exciting Finish
By Jeff Motz
WAVERLY---Lincoln Lutheran got a taste of sweet victory Thursday night, when the Warriors overcame an early first half deficit and rallied for a 49-44 triumph over Milford in the Boys Class C1 Subdistrict 3 basketball final at Waverly High School.
Lutheran will now play Columbus Scotus, last year's C1 State Runner-Up, for the C1 District 2 championship Monday night at Seward.
Henry Schmidt led the charge for the Warriors, scoring a game-high 18 points while Garett Wachal added 11 points and sophomore guard Logan Kreizel finished with 10 points.
Schmidt scored 10 of the first 11 points in the first quarter for Lutheran, who found themselves down 19-11 after one period, following an 11-2 run by Milford.
Then Wachal scored from close range and Austin Oerman converted on a three-point play to pull Lutheran to within three at 19-16 with 6:32 left in the second quarter. The Warriors kept within close reach at halftime, trailing the Eagles 26-21.
Milford (19-5) rallied from a 31-27 Lutheran advantage midway through the third quarter to take a 33-31 lead off a basket from Quinlan Kelley.
Lutheran then regained control on Austin Oerman's three-pointer with a minute left in the third quarter. Wachal scored on an offensive rebound as the buzzer sounded at the end of the third quarter that gave the Warriors a 36-33 lead.
Milford struggled to connect from long range, thanks to Lutheran's 2-3 and 1-3-1 zone staying in close to the paint and allowing the Eagles to shoot.
Brenden Gerlach finally connected on a three-pointer with 4:04 left to pull Milford to within three, 43-40. Lutheran responded with a layup from Schmidt, then Jaidon Policky answered for the Eagles with a basket. After a scramble for a loose ball, Andrew Houder scored a layup with 2:25 to play and Milford was down 45-44.
Lutheran closed out the game with a pair of free throws from Wachal and Kreizel closed out the game with 12 seconds left on a layup off the fastbreak.
Gerlach led Milford with 15 points, while Policky finished 10 points.
