- BOYS BASKETBALL: No. 5 East Dominates North Star
By Jeff Motz
Patience paid off for the Lincoln East boys basketball team, as the Class A No. 5 Spartans took off early and kept their distance in a 54-43 win over Lincoln North Star Friday night at The Swamp.
East (17-4) has claimed their eighth win in a row dating back to Jan. 22 after dropping the previous three games (Fremont, Lincoln Northeast and Omaha Burke).
Jordan Janssen provided the spark for the Spartans. The 6-5 sophomore scored a team-high 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field. East led 16-10 after the first quarter and kept a 26-19 advantage at halftime.
North Star got as close as five at one point, But East had an answer and led 39-31 and jumped ahead by 14 at 48-34 midway through the final period.
Triston Simpson led all scorers with 18 points for North Star, who falls to 10-10. Simpson, a South Dakota recruit, was slowed down by East's defense, as was teammate and senior guard Logan Cale. He finished with 12 points in the game.
