By Kellan Heavican
Lincoln Northeast doesn’t have an issue with going extra frames.
In an instinct classic, the Rockets battled Omaha Central to double overtime, leading to a 92-82 double overtime win for Northeast Saturday afternoon at the Ed Johnson Gym.
It was the second overtime game Northeast (8-5) played this season. The first one happened during the semifinals of the Heartland Athletic Conference Tournament, a 101-93 loss to Fremont.
The Rockets on Saturday were led by a trio of scorers who combined for 68 points in the game. Trace Tupper collected 23, Malcolm Helmstadter-Whitlow had 21 and Tyson Shadegg added 20.
The Eagles (7-4) led by double digits in the first quarter, but Northeast cut the deficit in half at halftime to 37-31.
Down 14 points midway through the third quarter, the Rockets mounted a comeback getting as close as 49-42 before Central went on a 6-2 run to lead 55-44 early in the final period.
Central led 64-60 after Roman Behrens nailed two free throws. Whitlow scored on a layup and later hit two free throws with less than 10 seconds left in regulation and Brandon Reed missed the game winning three for Central as time expired.
Central’s Isaiah Poor Bear-Chandler who battled Trace Tupper in the post all game fouled out in the final minute of regulation.
Tupper scored 9 of the game high 23 points in both overtimes and was perfect from the free throw line in the overtimes. Behrens led the Eagles with 23 points.
