- BOYS BASKETBALL: Rockets Upset No. 7 Spartans
By Jeff Motz
Freshman guard Malcolm Helmstadter-Whitlow made 1 of 2 free throws and Lincoln Northeast held off Class A No. 7 Lincoln East 54-51 Friday night at the East Gym in dramatic fashion.
Helmstadter-Whitlow missed the second free throw with nine seconds left, setting up a potential tie from the Spartans. A three-pointer attempted by East guard Hunter McPhail missed and follow try couldn't be converted, which led to the Northeast celebration.
Northeast (7-5) led 13-8 after the first quarter before taking a 26-21 halftime lead. Trace Tupper scored 10 of his game-high 22 points in the first half to keep the Rockets slightly distanced.
East (9-3) came surging back after a nine-point, third quarter deficit. An offensive rebound and putback from sophomore Jordan Janssen and a pair of free throws from 6-6 senior center Clay Reimers pulled the Spartans to within five, 37-32 heading to the fourth quarter.
Reimers, who led East with 19 points, hit two more free throws and Pete Ackerman tossed in two of his 12 points off the bench from the charity stripe with 5:42 to play to tie the game at 38.
It came down to free throws for Northeast, by converting on 11 of 14 attempts to keep the advantage late.
Helmstadter-Whitlow added 14 points in the Northeast win, who now plays Omaha Central Saturday afternoon at the Ed Johnson Gym. It's a game you can hear on LincolnPrepSports.com.
