- GIRLS BASKETBALL: Delgado's Threes Help Waverly Take Down Gretna
By Jeff Motz
WAVERLY---Mikenzie Delgado demonstrated just how good she can be as a long-range shooter.
The 5-3 senior scored a game-high 18 points, all of which were from three-point range as Class B No. 8 Waverly upended Class B No. 1 Gretna 58-35 in girls basketball Friday night at Waverly.
Five of Delgado's threes were in the first half but once the Dragons found a way to limit her shooting, the Vikings got help from senior forward Ashley Cook and center Brianna Boender.
Waverly used a 15-5 third quarter run sparked by nine of Cook's 13 points to lead 40-28. Turnovers kept Gretna from mounting a comeback in the final 16 minutes of the game. Karlie Kuhn topped scorers for the Dragons, with a team-high eight points off the bench.
Boender, who was held scoreless in the first half, came through in the final quarter. The senior scored nine of her 10 points in the final period.
