- From The Press Box: A Bit Of A Roller Coaster Ride Early In The Basketball Season
If we had to put out a new Top Ten in Class A, the Kearney boys basketball team would be toward the top of the rankings.
The Bearcats, with early quality wins over Omaha Creighton Prep and Omaha Burke, are off to a 3-0 start and may be a dangerous team to deal with heading into January.
Omaha South, our preseason pick at No. 1, remains pretty strong, as does Papillion-LaVista, Fremont, Norfolk and Lincoln Pius X, who moved up to Class A again.
As for the city race, Pius X is out ahead of Lincoln East, Lincoln Southeast and Lincoln Northeast. The Spartans were undefeated until Saturday night when Prep beat them 62-44.
Southeast is coming off a 75-60 loss at Norfolk to fall to 2-2. Northeast has won two straight (62-50 over Columbus and 65-50 over Bellevue West) and will face good competition, yet, this season.
On the girls side, Southeast and Pius X each have 2-2 records, while East stands out with a 3-1 record. Northeast, preseason ranked at No. 10, has slipped to 1-3. Southwest is still hanging in there at 2-1.
We'll have a definitive idea on where everyone stands after the holiday and conference tournaments are completed between Christmas and New Year's.
