- BOYS BASKETBALL: First Half Run Helps Prep In Win Over East
By Jeff Motz
Omaha Creighton Prep used a 23-5 first half run to further distance themselves from Lincoln East, as the defending Class A state champs won 62-44 Saturday night at the East Gym.
The Spartans (3-1) got an early boost from Clay Reimers, who scored seven of his 17 points during the early part of the game. East tied the game at nine with less than three minutes left in the period off a Jordan Janssen basket.
Prep (3-1), from there, took the lead for good.
Senior guard Nate Schimonitz scored four of his 18 points during the first quarter, which put the Junior Jays ahead 14-9. Hunter McPhail counted with a buzzer-beating jump shot, as East trailed 14-11.
A free throw from Nate Netz pulled the Spartans to within two before Prep finished the half on an 18-3 run on 6-of-9 shooting to take a 32-14 halftime lead.
East tried to counter early in the second half, but the Junior Jays extended their lead to 48-29 after three quarters and led by as much as 55-34 midway through the fourth quarter.
Will Schenken and Joey Machado each added 11 points in the win for Prep.
Janssen, a 6-5 sophomore, added nine points before fouling out for East.
