WAVERLY---When your top shooters are struggling to connect, you go to your reserves.

Enter Jake Schneider of Waverly.

The 6-2 senior scored all of his team-high 15 points in the second half and from three-point range, including what turned out to be the game winner, as the Vikings earned a 58-57 win over Elkhorn Friday night.

Schneider scored nine of his points in the third quarter, including a three to put Waverly up 35-30.  Elkhorn then went on a 13-5 run to close the quarter to take a 43-40 lead.

The Antlers (0-1) extended their lead to 50-44 with 5:51 to play off a basket from forward Sean Witecy.  Waverly countered with a 7-0 run, including another Schneider three-pointer with 5:11 left to pull the Vikings to within three, 50-47.

Jaron Bricker got a steal and a breakaway layup and hit another basket for a 51-50 Viking lead with 2:52 left.

Over the final two-and-a-half minutes, both teams traded baskets.  Tanner Wubbels scored from close range to give Waverly a 55-54 lead with under a minute to go.

Elkhorn then took control 57-55 on a three-pointer from Weston Behlen with 32 seconds left.  After a Waverly timeout, the Vikings then went to Schneider, who buried the game-winning three pointer with 14 seconds left.

With a chance to score, Elkhorn guard Noah Moreano drove the length of the floor and missed a layup before Waverly senior center Austin Wubbels grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 3.3 seconds to play.

Austin Wubbels missed both free throws and as Elkhorn was working to get the ball up court, Schneider intercepted the pass to secure a Viking win.

Tanner Wubbels added 13 points for Waverly, while Austin Wubbels finished with 10 points.

Elkhorn was led by Neil's 21 points, while Witecy added 15 points and Behlen finished with 10.
