- GIRLS BASKETBALL: No. 8 Waverly Holds Off Elkhorn
By Jeff Motz
WAVERLY---A quick 8-0 start and the Waverly girls basketball team didn't have to look back too much in their 43-30 victory over Elkhorn Friday night.
The Class B No. 8 Vikings are proving they are a team that others shouldn't take lightly. Consider this, Waverly's two wins over defending Class B state champ Lincoln Pius X on Thursday and Friday's win over state tourney qualifier Elkhorn, only 52 combined points were allowed.
Impressive to say the least.
After a 10-3 first quarter lead, Waverly (2-0) saw their lead trimmed to two at 14-12 halfway through the second period. Mikenzie Delgado's three-pointer and a steal and layup from Kelsey Doran put the Vikings up 21-14 at halftime.
Out of the break, Waverly started the second half on a 9-0 run sparked by senior forward Ashley Cook, who scored on a layup off a pass from Brianna Boender. Cook, though, on the play hurt her right ankle and didn't return to the game.
Elkhorn (0-1) got to within six at 30-24 when Waverly scored five straight points on a three-pointer from Doran and a basket from Amanda Cook to pull away with five minutes remaining in the game.
Boender led the Vikings with nine points. Brooke Carlson was the only player in double-figures with 11 points to lead Elkhorn.
