11/06/2015 - CLASS B FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS: Skutt Soars Off Pius X Miscue

By Jeff Motz

One play late in the second quarter proved to be the ignition source for Omaha Skutt's offense in the Class B state football quarterfinals on Friday night.

A miscue on Lincoln Pius X's part sparked the SkyHawks to a 17-0 victory at Vince Aldrich Field before a reporter estimated crowd of 2,000 fans.

The play, a lateral from Pius X quarterback Joe Raun to receiver Tyler Gill, wasn't ruled dead and Skutt defensive lineman Connor Schwetschenau recovered the ball for a fumble at the Thunderbolt 27-yard line.  In a matter of four plays, it was running back Jarrett Damewood who broke the scoring drought with a 6-yard run with 21 seconds left before halftime that put the SkyHawks up 7-0.

Skutt (10-1) put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter, when Quinn Mendlik booted a 25-yard field goal and running back Joe LaMontia broke free for a 72-yard touchdown run to ice the game.

Pius X, who finishes the season with the best record by any city team at 7-4, had two scoring opportunities from field goal range.  But Nathan Asselin's attempt from 31-yards out in the second quarter sailed left and a 25-yard shot barely missed the right upright.

The win for Skutt marks the fourth shutout of the season and second victory over Pius X this season.  The Oct. 2 game, though, went down to the wire where the SkyHawks escaped with a 31-24 triple overtime victory over the Thunderbolts.

Skutt now has another rematch ahead next week in the Class B semifinal, top-ranked Elkhorn South.  The Storm upset the previously top-ranked SkyHawks 28-23 three weeks ago.
