- A-7 DISTRICT VOLLEYBALL: Knights Punch Ticket To State With Win Over Gators
By Kellan Heavican
The perfect storm set up the A-7 district volleyball championship match Wednesday night at Lincoln North Star High School.
The match up of ranked teams, No. 8 North Star and No. 6 Lincoln Southeast, made it prime for one of the bigger district championships of the evening.
However, Southeast gained the upper hand and defeated North Star 25-19, 25-22, 8-25 and 25-15 to win the district title, giving the Knights an automatic berth to the NSAA State Volleyball Tournament. The Gators will now have to wait and see if they can clinch a wildcard berth to state.
Southeast (22-14) was led by 6-1 senior Nerissa Moravec, who recorded 13 kills in the match, with seven coming in the second set. Melanie Breka added eight kills for the Knights.
Sarah Allick, who is headed to Augustana College next year, led North Star with 16 kills, with six coming in the third set. Teammate Ashly Kistatis added 13 kills in the match for the Gators, five of which in the third frame.
The win gives Southeast the season series victory. Both teams split the previous two matches, each winning 3-1.
Earlier in the evening, North Star swept Bellevue East and Southeast won in three-straight sets over Omaha North to get to the district championship match.
