- CLASS B FOOTBALL: Andreasen Adjusts To Help Pius X Win Over GINW
By Jeff Motz
GRAND ISLAND---He's a fullback, but Jakob Andreasen can play running back, too.
Well, he adjusted at the last minute Friday night.
It didn't phase the Lincoln Pius X junior, has he ran for 195 yards and one touchdown to help the Thunderbolts to a 14-0 victory over Grand Island Northwest in the first round of the Class B football playoffs at Viking Field.
Andreasen found out before game time that he would be the starting running back, after starter Brock Wordekemper was coming down with a migraine headcache just before kickoff.
Pius X Coach Tim Aylward opted not to play Wordekemper and go with Andreasen.
It paid off.
Fullback Chris Cassidy scored Pius X's first touchdown, a three-yard run on the Bolts' second drive for a 7-0 lead with 2:11 in the first quarter.
After Spencer Scheer intercepted a Christian Ellsworth pass and returned it 30 yards to the Northwest 28-yard line, the Thunderbolts went up 14-0 with 5:05 left in the second quarter after Andreasen's drive into the end zone.
Northwest (6-4) couldn't muster their passing attack in the rainy conditions. But the Vikings did drive to the Pius X 2-yard line early in the fourth quarter and on 4th and 2, Ellsworth's pass to Tanner Lierman went incomplete when Lierman could grab what appeared to be an under-thrown ball.
A brief Pius X drive resulted in a punt and Northwest with the ball, getting a first down past midfield. On the next play, a pass was caught by Viking receiver, but squirted out of his hands and the ball was recovered by Thunderbolt rush end Bailey Deterding.
Pius X ran out the clock and sealed the win. The 'Bolts will now host Omaha Skutt in a rematch of a game from Oct. 2, which the SkyHawks won in triple overtime.
