- FOOTBALL: Pius X Earns 11th District Title
By Jeff Motz
You could have played Boston's "Long Time" through out Aldrich Field Friday night, after Lincoln Pius X earned a 31-18 win over Beatrice to win the B-5 district title and earn a spot in the Class B State Football playoffs.
The "long time" reference is toward Pius X's first district title since their 2004 Class B State Championship season. The Thunderbolts, who was a state qualifier a year ago, had made several post season trips since their last state title run.
For 30-year Pius X head coach Tim Aylward, the win marked a coaching mile stone, with 203 victories and leading his team to a 27th state playoff appearance.
But ending the 11-year drought of not winning a district crown seemed inevitable midway through the first half.
Once Beatrice closed in on Pius X in the second quarter, trailing 7-6, the Thunderbolts responded with 14 unanswered points with fullback Chris Cassidy scoring on a 1-yard run to end a 63-yard drive. Then TJ Hansen intercepted a Alec Cromer pass to set up a quick 40-yard drive that was capped with a 1-yard touchdown run from Jakob Andreasen for a 21-6 Pius X lead at halftime.
Pius X's (6-3) defense continued to pressure Cromer and the Beatrice offense in the second half. Hansen intercepted another Cromer pass and the Orangemen had trouble establishing their ground game against the 'Bolts.
Offensively, Pius X shredded Beatrice's defense. Brock Wordekemper scored his second touchdown of the night, with a 3-yard run with 7:32 left in the third quarter to extend the Thunderbolt lead at 28-6. Nate Asselin tacked on a 37-yard field goal into the north wind for a 31-6 advantage.
Despite the loss, the Orangemen still qualify for the state playoffs.
