- FOOTBALL: Gators Hold Off Links To Claim City Title
By Kellan Heavican
Lincoln North Star used three-second half punts to pin Lincoln High inside their own 2-yard line.
The Navigators were able to get a safety in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter that sealed the 9-0 win Friday afternoon at Seacrest Field.
Lincoln High had a chance to win the city-league championship but couldn’t muster enough offense to score.
Going into halftime, North Star (4-4) was outgained 95-23. They also had committed two turnovers. But Lincoln High (3-5) failed to sustain a drive and the game was scoreless at intermission.
North Star used the ground game on their opening drive of the second half. On a 9- play 64 yard drive, Caleb Osmond scored on an 8-yard touchdown run. But, the Lincoln High defense responded on the next drive when it appeared that North Star running back Talin Hunt had scored, but a pile up at the goal line proved otherwise.
Lincoln High failed to move the ball out of the shadow of their own end zone. Links quarterback Anthony Evans was sacked in the end zone for a safety.
Even though Lincoln High outgained North Star 122 to 116, a chance at a city-league championship was just out of grasp.
