- FOOTBALL: Kearney Takes Advantage of Southwest's Miscues
By Kellan Heavican
Several first-quarter miscues cost the #10 Lincoln Southwest Silverhawks Friday afternoon at Seacrest Field against Kearney. The Bearcats took advantage and marched away with a 26-14 win over the Silver Hawks.
Southwest looked to have momentum early in the first quarter. But Kearney’s defense held in the red-zone. The Bearcats (1-1) thwarted two drives thanks to a fumble recovery and a fourth down stop.
Kearney used the short fields to push their lead to 14-0 from quarterback Jake Waller on a one-yard sneak. Then Waller connected to Zach King on a 21-yard touchdown pass.
Kearney started the half the way they ended the first half. Jake Waller found Zach Blaschko for a 74 yard touchdown pass. The PAT was no good and the Bearcats led 20-0.
Southwest (1-1) finally got on the board after Head Coach Mark King switched quarterbacks. Bo Els ran the ball once for 62 yards and 48 yards for two touchdowns. Those scores cut the lead to six with 3:11 left. The Silverhawks failed to get a stop and Kearney iced the game on a one-yard touchdown run from running back Noah Urbanek.
