- CLASS A STATE BASEBALL: Millard South's Wild Rally Ends Southwest's Season
By Jeff Motz
PAPILLION---The unthinkable happened Thursday morning at Werner Park---a 19-run rally for Millard South to beat Lincoln Southwest 19-9 in the Class A championship round of the State Baseball Tournament.
The Patriots then fell to Omaha Westside 1-0 in the championship game, while the Silver Hawks finish their season at 26-9.
Southwest jumped out to a 9-0 lead heading to the top of the third when Millard South mounted one of the greatest comebacks in state tournament history.
Fourteen batters appeared for the Patriots in the 10-run fifth inning. Sparked by an RBI double from Dylan Uher, a pinch-hit three-run homer for Colton Busch tied the game at 9-9. Then a pair of two-run singles from Garren Pauli and Drew Gilin gave Millard South their first lead at 13-9.
Following a three up, three down inning in the Southwest fifth, the Patriots scored four more times in the top of the sixth. Jared Renken and Nate Mallott each reached on singles and later scored on a two-run double from Pauli. Gilin then reached on a single and Uher picked up a two-run double for a 19-9 lead.
Millard South chipped away at the Southwest 9-0 lead in the third after Mallott delivered a two-run double, then got three more runs in the fourth.
The opposite happened in the first two innings. Southwest had an early 2-0 lead, after a two-run triple from Chase Gobel. Seven runs came home in the third. Jonathan Leach got on first after a dropped third strike, picked up a steal and advanced to third on a single from Cal White.
Logan Foster drove in Leach on a single to centerfield, later scoring off a two-run single from Braxton Tonniges. Later, three runs scored of a dropped fly ball to center from Conner Sudik and Leach batted around with an RBI single for the 9-0 lead.
