05/19/2015 - CLASS A STATE BASEBALL: Westside Rally Dooms Southwest

PAPILLION---Omaha Westside got a little boost in their offense on a defensive play Tuesday night.

The Class A No. 1 ranked and two-time defending state champion Warriors capitalized on a fifth inning put out and used a sixth inning scoring explosion to earn an 8-1 win over Lincoln Southwest to remain the only undefeated team in the Class A State Baseball Tournament at Werner Park.

Westside and its 3-0 tournament record will have a spot in the Class A championship series Thursday, but must play Millard South Wednesday at 4pm.  Southwest will play an elimination game Wednesday at 7pm against Millard West.

Southwest led 1-0 when Jared Jesske singled in a run in the bottom of the fourth.  Westside rallied for a pair of runs and hits in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom half of the fifth, the Silver Hawks were threatening.  Mitch Conklin had a lead off single, followed by a hit from Cal White and a base hit to center from Logan Foster set up what would have been the tying run.

Westside centerfielder Nate Hall picked up and hurled the ball back to home to catcher Alex Nielsen, who straddled the third base line ahead of Conklin trying to score.  Nielsen made the catch, applied the tag on Conklin to get the out.

From there, the Warriors fed off of that play for momentum and set up a six-run sixth inning.  Nielsen delivered a three-run double and Mitch Hagan hit a two run double off a fly ball that got lost in the lights by Foster.

Designated hitter Will Patterson delivered the final blow for Westside, with an RBI single to score Hagan.

Defensively, Southwest committed three errors to Westside's two in the game.
