- CLASS B STATE BASEBALL: Pius X Not Phased By Rain To Handle Platte Valley

A wind-driven rain Saturday night at Haymarket Park did little to hamper Lincoln Pius X's performance on the baseball field.
The Thunderbolts struck early and defeated Platte Valley 9-1 in the quarterfinal of the NSAA Class B State Baseball Tournament.
The win for Pius X puts them in the winner's bracket semifinal Monday at 7pm at Haymarket Park against Omaha Skutt, who beat Seward 7-5.
To open the bottom of the 1st, the three of the first four Pius batters drew walks and a hit batsman drew the first run of the game. In the 2nd, Nolan Meyer reached on a hit by pitch, then his courtesy runner Thomas Hoefner scored off a double from Michael Helman.
Jared Nottlemann picked up an RBI single in the fourth that drove in Helman, before a four-run scoring explosion in the fifth. Brock Wordekemper led off and reached base on a hit by pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice from Micah Hoage. Evan Helman pinch-hit RBI single scored Wordekemper and Nick Alridge loaded the bases with a hit before Michael Helman's three-run double made it 8-0 Thunderbolts.
Platte Valley managed to score their only run in the top of the sixth, when Brody Elliott single and later scored off a Zach Jones single.
Wordekemper scored again in the sixth off a Hoefner ground out to short and Tyler Crouse came out of the bullpen in the seventh for Ryan Junker to close out the win.
Junker collected 10 strikeouts, while only giving up one run and five hits to pick up the win.
