The hot bat of Grand Island shortstop Calvin Hehnke caused fits for Lincoln Southwest at crucial times of the A-2 District baseball championship.

Hehnke's three-run homer, two-run extra inning double and a put out at the plate earned the Islanders the district crown with a 7-6 win over the Silver Hawks Monday afternoon at Sherman Field.

Grand Island's win gives them an automatic berth to the Class A State Baseball tournament that starts Saturday at Werner Park in Papillion.   Southwest will earn one of two wild cards (the other going to Papillion-LaVista).

The Islanders (20-7) forced extra innings, after Parker Upton singled in Cedric Moreno to tie the game at 5 and forcing the Silver Hawks to strand a runner on base.

After Moreno struck out to lead off the top of the eighth, Keenan Ketteler doubled and Upton drew a walk.  Hehnke doubled off Southwest pitcher and Texas A&M recruit Logan Foster at the centerfield wall and drove in two runs for the 7-5 lead.

Southwest (24-7) got a single from Mitch Conklin to start the bottom half of the inning.  After Cal White struckout, Foster and Braxton Tonniges were each hit by a pitch.  Conklin was thrown out on a force out at home when Jesske reached on a fielder's choice.

Left fielder Isaiah Peterson then singled up the middle, driving home Foster.  But as Tonniges was rounding third and heading for home, Hehnke grabbed the ball from short and threw home to catcher Matthew Lamb, who applied the tag.  Tonniges was called out at home, leading to a celebration for the Islanders.

Hehnke went 3-of-4 at the plate for Grand Island, which included a single, double and a three-run homer in the second inning for a 4-2 Islander lead.

Southwest rallied for three unanswered runs, picking up two runs in the second and another in the fourth when Foster scored off a single from Peterson.  The Silver Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Chase Gobel was hit by a pitch and Tonniges scored.  Connor Sudik's walk scored Jared Jesske.

Both teams combined for six errors.  Trey Kissack only lasted 1 2/3 innings pitching for Grand Island, before right-handed sidearm hurler Ryan Krolikowski lasted 5 2/3 innings and Gavin Gragg came in to earn the save.

Hogan Shaw went 4 and 1/3 for Southwest, while Foster finished the game in relief.
