05/09/2015 - DISTRICT A-4 BASEBALL: Titans Advance, End Rockets' Season

By Jeff Motz

OMAHA---In what was an exciting pitching game, Papillion-LaVista South took advantage of a lead-off hit in the fourth inning.

Catcher Brandon Krayneski delivered an RBI single to score Grant Suponchick to give the Titans a 1-0 victory over Lincoln Northeast in the A-4 district baseball semifinal Saturday afternoon at Millard South's Pat Hagge Field.

The win for PLVS puts them in Monday's district championship against Millard South, who beat South Sioux City 9-0 in the other Saturday semifinal.

Suponcheck led off the bottom of the fourth with a single, then stole second base and advanced to third off of Ben Palensky's sacrifice fly to center.  Krayneski's infield single scored Suponcheck and Papio South's pitching and defense kept Northeast in check.

In the Rockets' half of the fourth, Wyatt Divis led off with the single and his courtesy runner Reid Neill advanced to second on Caden Highsmith's sacrifice.  An error committed by Krayneski after a dropped strike three allowed Jimmy Burbach to reach base, advancing Neill to third.  After Derrick Curtis walked to load the bases, Titan pitcher Aaron Homme struck out Drew Chesley and all three were left stranded.

As Papio South saw their final six hitters retired by Northeast hurler Divis, the Rockets threatened in the seventh when pinch hitter Brody Pappas hit a two out single.  Talon Little's ground out to short ended Northeast's season at 9-16.

The Rockets had an early opportunity to score in the second, when Curtis hit a ground ball to third and Highsmith was caught in a rundown between third and home, then Burbach was thrown out trying to advance to third.

Papio South (20-9) tried to take a lead in the bottom of the second, when Ben Palensky single, then stole second and was on his way home off a Bradley Spencer hit and was tagged out at home on the throw from Curtis in right field.

Homme earned the win for the Titans, going the distance by striking out six and only allowing four hits in the shutout.  Papio South did commit three errors in the game.

Divis collected seven strikeouts and gave up the game's only run on four hits.
