- BASEBALL: Highsmith's Three-Run HR Powers LNE Over Links
By Jeff Motz
One big swing of the bat from Caden Highsmith made a big difference for the Lincoln Northeast baseball team Monday afternoon.
The Rockets got a boost from the sophomore third baseman in the first inning with a three-run homer in a 5-0 victory over Lincoln High at Sherman Field.
Highsmith's shot over the left field fence that went under the scoreboard burst open the game for Northeast, who improved to 4-11 on the season. Senior shortstop Ryan Garver led off with a single and scored two batters later when Wyatt Divis drove him in on a double.
Jimmy Burbach then singled, setting up Highsmith's left field blast.
Over the next four innings, Northeast stranded nine runners on base, including six in scoring position. In the sixth, Divis drew a lead-off walk and later scored on an RBI single from Highsmith.
Burbach, who pitched 5 and 1/3 innings for the Rockets, struck out six Lincoln High batters and gave up only three hits and allowed five base runners before Logan Kirk came in relief to strike out the rest of the side.
Lincoln High (5-10) had three batters (DeAngelo Sommers, Logan Linville and Jamie Young) each collect one hit. Overall, Northeast outhit the Links 13-3.
Highsmith led Northeast batters by going 3-for-4, including the three-run homer, a single and and RBI single. Garver and Burbach each had two-hit performances.
