- BASEBALL: Second Inning Spurt Helps LSW Over Pius X
By Jeff Motz
A four-run second inning proved to be the difference in Lincoln Southwest's win in game one of the baseball season Thursday.
The Silver Hawks also held off a rally to beat defending Class B state champion Lincoln Pius X 6-3 at Sherman Field.
Mitch Conklin's lead off single in the Southwest (1-0) half of the second inning led to a steal before Max McGuire struck out. Chase Gobel drove in Conklin on an RBI double and after Cal White's pop out to second, scored off an RBI single from Braxton Tonniges for a quick 2-0 start.
Tonniges later scored off a Jared Jesske single, then Isaiah Peterson reached on an error and a Logan Foster walk on a Ball 4 wild pitch, allowed Jesske to score to put the Silver Hawks up 4-0.
Pius X (0-1) picked up two runs and three hits in their half of the third inning. Michael Helman doubled and scored off Jared Nottleman's single. Colton Abendroth walked and Nolan Hakel's single into centerfield drove in Nottleman, leaving the Thunderbolts trailing 4-2 midway through the third inning.
Southwest's lone run in the fourth came after White reached on a Pius X throwing error, then advanced on a sacrifice from Tonniges. White scored off a single to left field from Jesske for a 5-2 advantage.
Pius X's final run came in the top of the sixth, when Nolan Meyer reached on a single and advanced on two ground outs before Evan Helman's single drove him home.
Southwest relief pitcher Hogan Shaw reached base in the seventh, after Evan Helman dropped a fly ball. Shaw's courtesy runner, Jonathan Leach, later scored on a sacrifice fly.
Foster, who went 1-for-2 at the plate with a double and a walk, went four innings on the mound to earn the win, while Shaw picked up the save for Southwest.
Ryan Junker took the loss for Pius X, after he gave up four runs and five hits through 3 and 1/3 innings. Left-hander Tyler Crouse gave up two runs and a hit in the final 2 and 2/3 innings.
