- CLASS A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Warriors Outlast No. 2 Rockets
By Jeff Motz
No. 4 Omaha Westside burst open for a 14-0 second quarter run that paved the way for a 61-49 victory over No. 2 Lincoln Northeast in the Class A Girls State Basketball Tournament semifinals Friday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
The Warriors (25-3) will play Norfolk in the Class A State Championship game Saturday at 6:30pm. The Panthers defeated Bellevue West 36-23 in the other Class A semifinal Friday.
While shots were not falling for Northeast (25 percent on 15-of-60 shooting), Westside turned up the heat and utilized their transition game to get the ball to the basket. The Warriors did hit seven three-pointers in the first half alone.
Westside led 21-20 midway through the second quarter, when the run started. Four three-pointers came from Lynsey Curran, Jay Bridgeman and freshman Quinn Weidemann to spark the run and gave the Warriors a 35-20 lead.
Northeast (25-2) trailed 36-24 at the half, following a last-second three-pointer junior guard Megan Sattler. The Rockets got as close as 39-34 in the third period after Jamie Holscher's three-pointer.
However, Westside kept the game out of reach the rest of the way, even going on an 8-0 run that put the Warriors ahead 50-37 with 4:25 to play.
Weidemann scored 18 points to lead the Warriors to the championship game. In her final high school game, Northeast's Tantashea Giger scored a game-high 21 points before fouling out late.
