- BOYS A-7 DISTRICT BASKETBALL: Northeast Outlasts Millard North
By Jeff Motz
It was just the tune up Lincoln Northeast needed to have before a date Monday night at South Sioux City.
The Rockets had four players in double figures, led by Derrick Curtis' 19 points, to earn a 73-53 win over Millard North Saturday evening in the District A-7 semifinals at the Ed Johnson Gym.
Northeast and South Sioux City will play for the district title Monday at 7pm at South Sioux City, a rematch of last year's district semifinal that the Rockets won before winning the district.
In addition to Curtis, sophomore Tyson Shadegg scored 16 points, center Khan Kailech had 14 points and nine rebounds, while senior guard Ryan Garver added 12 points in the win.
Northeast (19-5) used great ball movement and passing to sprint ahead of the Mustangs. A 13-2 start for the Rockets later turned into a 33-20 halftime lead. But Curtis and Shadegg pulled Northeast away the rest of the game. Shadegg's three-pointer from the top of the circle put the Rockets up 55-36 heading to the fourth quarter.
Millard North got as close as 13 points, but could never recover. Senior Trae Anderson led the Mustangs with 13 points, while sophomore center Carter Larson added 12 points.
