- BOYS BASKETBALL: Links Overcome Injury To Stop Patriots
By Jeff Motz
It certainly hasn't been a positive week for Lincoln High's boys basketball team.
Without 6-5 senior center/forward Jason Towery in the line up on Saturday night, the Class A No. 6 Links overcame a lack of size and used quickness to power past Millard South 73-64 at Earl Johnson Gym.
Towery, who suffered an ankle injury, was in street clothes on the bench for the third straight game. But his Lincoln High teammates didn't seem to be phased by that and stuck to their game of playing up tempo.
Jaden Jilg-Brown, a 6-1 senior forward, stepped up and led the Links with 20 points in the game. His performance in the second half sparked the Links to a 56-38 third quarter lead. Jilg-Brown scored 13 of his points in the final two periods.
Lincoln High (18-3) nearly gave the game back into the hands of Millard South late in the game.
Matt Kirkle hit a three-pointer to pull the Patriots to within nine, 68-59, with less than 1:30 remaining.
After Lincoln High pulled ahead 71-61, Noah Dartmann hit a three-pointer to close the gap to seven. But Tim Brock, who finished with 16 points, sealed the win for Lincoln High by hitting a pair of free throws.
The Links raced to an 18-7 first quarter lead before a 38-20 halftime advantage. Frank Cuddy scored 11 of the Links' 20 second quarter points. He wound up finishing with 12 in the game.
Lincoln High senior guard KeShawn Wilson produced another double-digit scoring performance, finishing with 14 points.
Millard South (10-10) got 25 points from junior forward Garran Pauli, 12 points from Kirkle and Ryan Pfitzer with 10.
