- BOYS BASKETBALL: Garver Leads No. 8 Northeast Over North Platte
By Jeff Motz
Ryan Garver has a knack for good defense and creating things in transition.
The 6-2 Lincoln Northeast senior guard sparked the Rocket fastbreak in the second quarter, finishing with 21 points in leading to a 59-37 victory over North Platte on Friday night at Ed Johnson Gym.
The Rockets (15-4) started cold, trailing North Platte 14-11 into the second quarter. Northeast rallied on a 17-8 run through the period. Garver got seven points during that stretch, while sophomore guard Tyson Shadegg nailed a three-pointer to put the Rockets ahead for good at 22-19 with 1:51 remaining in the half.
Garver and Shadegg continued to heat up, as Northeast stretched its lead to 47-29 through three quarters. A short-lived 8-2 North Platte rally saw the Bulldogs get as close as 12 points in the fourth quarter before the Rockets pulled away by scoring 10 straight points.
Shadegg added 15 points in the win for Northeast. Shane Mauch scored 10 of his team-high 15 points in the first half to lead North Platte, while Rayshawn Bryant finished with 12 points. The duo helped spark a Bulldog lead that got as high as 17-11 before the Rocket rally.
