01/30/2015 - BOYS BASKETBALL: Scoring Run Launches Rockets To 12th Win

By Jeff Motz

Lincoln Northeast shook off Lincoln Pius X midway through the 2nd quarter and never looked back.

The Rockets outscored the Thunderbolts 25-1 over a span of two quarter and cruised to a 67-43 Friday night in boys basketball at Bishop Flavin Gym.

But it didn't come easy early on for Northeast (12-4) .

Leading 15-6 heading to the second quarter, the Rockets went stale offensively and allowed Pius X to crawl back to tie the game.  Aaron Heyen sparked a 9-3 rally, by scoring twice, then Joe Burt added a three pointer before Northeast's Tyler Keller hit a three-pointer.

Greigh Howell added a three-pointer and Pius X tied the game up at 18 with Heyen's third basket.

Northeast's 25-1 run was sparked by Ryan Garver's layup wtih 4:20 left in the first half. A Garver free-throw, along with a free throw from Tyson Shaddegg and Garver's steal and layup, followed by a free-throw from Chase Townsend made it a 25-18 Rocket lead with 1:34 left before halftime.

Pius X guard Brett Boeve hit one of two free throws, but Northeast scored six straight baskets to finish the final minute of the half.  Two of those baskets from Garver, who first scored on a layup and stole the inbounds pass and scored.

After another Pius X turnover, Liem Liem scored just before the buzzer and Northeast took a 31-19 lead.

Northeast continued the run to start the third quarter by scoring 12 more unanswered points.  Garver scored his final basket of his 15-point performance, then Shadegg added a basket in transition.  Derrick Curtis' two layups and a basket from Liem, followed by a Shadegg layup off an assist from Khan Kailech made it 43-19 with 5:27 left in the third quarter.

A three-pointer from Howell ended the long scoring drought for Pius X, whose 4-9 on the year.  It sparked a 16-2 run for the Thunderbolts, as they trailed 45-35 through three periods.

Northeast would then outscore Pius X 22-8 the rest of the game to earn the win.

Liem finished with a game-high 17 points for the Rockets, while Howell was the only Thunderbolt player in double-figures with 10 points.
