Tantashea Giger and Shaneequah Watkins made sure they kept Lincoln Northeast's uptempo, transition game in tact.

The two seniors combined to score 44 points and helped the Class A second-ranked Rockets stay undefeated with a 62-50 victory Thursday night over Class B No. 1 Lincoln Pius X in girls basketball at the Ed Johnson Gym.

Northeast, now 16-0, will put their undefeated record on the line Saturday afternoon when they travel to play top-ranked, undefeated and defending Class A champ Omaha Benson.

A 9-0 spurt during a 20-9 second quarter broke open a close game and put the Rockets ahead 35-22 at halftime.  Watkins, who scored 16 of her game-high 23 points in the first half, scored twice during the run while Giger and Aaliyah Evans each had a basket during the run.

Pius X (13-1) got as close as 39-32 in the third quarter before the Rockets outran the Thunderbolts 16-7 at one point all the way through the middle part of the fourth quarter.

Northeast had chances to further extend their lead at the free throw line, but Giger spent much of the final period at the foul line.  Of the 9-of-21 free throws made by her in the game, Giger made seven of those in the final quarter and finished with 21 points.

Pius X simply could not utilize their inside game any more, as the Rockets buckled down on defense and collapse in on foward Kennedy Sander and center Becky Brokaw.

Nebraska recruit Maddie Simon ended up with a team-high 22 points for the Thunderbolts.  Sander added 13 points.
