- BOYS BASKETBALL: Late Rally Helps No. 4 North Beat North Star
By Jeff Motz
Class A No. 4 Omaha North got a game from Lincoln North Star Saturday night.
But it took a 13-0, fourth quarter rally to help the Vikings beat the Gators 55-50 before an estimated 800 people at The Swamp.
North (13-3) started the rally when they trailed North Star 46-40 with 3:43 left in the game. Davion Reed scored two of his team-high 20 points for the Vikings, then a North Star turnover led to a Jordan Nash layup. Another North Star turnover led to another North fastbreak and a Reed layup to tie the game at 46 with three minutes remaining.
But North Star (5-10) had an opportunity to regain the lead, after Logan Cale missed a three-pointer but was fouled in the act of shooting by North center Justin Patton, who committed his fifth foul.
Cale, however, missed all three attempts from the free throw line and North countered with a three-pointer from Reed with 1:58 left for a 49-46 advantage.
Jordan Nash added 3-of-4 free throws with a little more than a minute to go and Anthony Laravie added another free-throw to give the Vikings a 53-46 lead with 44 seconds left.
After a Grant Baker basket to pull North Star closer to North, Grant Martin sank the second of two free throw attempts to keep the Viking lead. Baker's second field goal pulled North Star to within four and a free throw from Reed sealed the win for North.
North jumped out to a 13-5 first quarter lead before holding a 15-10 advantage to start the second quarter. North Star rallied to take a 26-25 halftime lead behind Triston Simpson and Dillon Brandt. Eight of Simpson's 18 points came in the first half, while Brandt scored 10 of his 14 points through two quarters.
Nash, who scored 13 points, and Marquise Lewis (11 points) were the only two other North players in double figures. Patton, a Creighton recruit, only had four points for the Vikings before fouling out.
