- BOYS BASKETBALL: Northeast Blasts Past Southeast
By Jeff Motz
Lincoln Northeast wasted no time getting the ball down the court and scoring.
The Rockets used a 29-point second quarter to pull away for a 78-62 victory over Lincoln Southeast Saturday night at the Prasch Center.
Derrick Curtis scored a layup to put Northeast ahead 12-10 at the end of the first quarter, which primed the Rockets for the big second quarter run. Khan Kailech scored on an early layup, while Ryan Garver hit a pair of free throws. Southeast got a pair of free throws on a one-and-one situation from Austin Johnson to cut the Northeast lead to 16-12.
Two possessions later, Chase Townsend converted on a three-point play and Garver added a fastbreak layup for a 21-12 Northeast lead with 5:59 left before halftime.
Brayden Day then answered for Southeast by hitting a three-pointer, but the Knights were then outscored 20-6 in the final five minutes of the half, as Northeast led 41-21.
Southeast then went on a 10-0 run midway through the third quarter. Jace Anderson hit a pair of free throws and Trevor Dockum added one of two free throws on a technical foul against Curtis.
Alex Euse added a basket, then Brady McDonald added a three-pointer and Sam Morris sank two free throws off a technical foul against Kailech, getting the Knights as close as 48-37 before Northeast pulled away.
Morris had a game-high 22 points for Southeast, who falls to 1-5. Four Northeast players were in double-figures, led by Garver's 19 points. Kailech added 17 points for the Rockets, who are now 5-1. Liem Liem and Tyson Shadegg each scored 10 points in the Northeast win.
