- BOYS BASKETBALL: Northeast Holds Off Westside Comeback
By Jeff Motz
An 8-0 first quarter start for Lincoln Northeast fueled the Rockets to a 64-51 victory over Omaha Westside in opening game of the Early Bird boys basketball tournament at the Ed Johnson Gym Thursday night. The win puts the Rockets in the championship game with Millard North Saturday afternoon at Westside.
But it was a fourth quarter spurt from Westside that nearly turned the tide, as the Warriors erased a 48-29 Rocket lead by going on a 16-4 run. A feisty full-court press helped Westside in the rally, where the Warriors got as close as 52-45 on a basket by Trae Marks with 3:36 to play.
Northeast got a three-pointer from senior forward Liem Liem to boost their lead to 10 and held off Westside the rest of the game.
The Rockets led 16-10 heading to the second quarter and ended the first half on a 10-0 run, which saw Tyler Keller hit back to back three-pointers and baskets from seniors Ryan Garver and Derrick Curtis that gave Northeast a 30-15 halftime lead.
Garver led with a game-high 13 points, while Keller finished with 12 points--all of which came from behind the three-point arc. Curtis ended the game with 11 points.
AJ Meeks led Westside with 12 points and Trae Meeks added 10.
