- FOOTBALL: Monarchs Capitalize On Links Miscues To Earn First Win
By Jeff Motz
Papillion-LaVista rolled into Lincoln Friday evening searching for their first win of the season, any way they could.
The Monarchs pulled away from Lincoln High in the second half and held on to earn their first win of the season by the final of 32-9 at the Beechner Athletic Complex.
Lincoln High initially struck first with a 33-yard field goal from Jose Perez Blanco that barely made it over the crossbar for a 3-0 lead with 6:56 left in the first half.
A series of dropped punt returns from Lincoln High allowed Papillion-LaVista to take control, eventually setting up a 15-yard touchdown pass from Jack Kalina to Taylor Peszulik for an 8-3 halftime lead. It would get worse from there for Lincoln High.
The Links would find themselves lose yardage to several penalties, including holding and personal fouls. Papillion-LaVista would go to the air, as Kalina hooked up with Gabe Kendall on a 21-yard touchdown pass, plus adding the two-point conversion from Kalina extended the Monarchs lead to 16-3 midway through the third quarter.
Lincoln High (0-5) would turn the ball over on back to back possessions early in the fourth quarter. A bad snap at their 24-yard line allowed Peszulik to scoop up the football and run it in for their fourth score of the game and a 22-3 lead with 8:55 in the game.
A quick three-and-out allowed Papillion-LaVista to regroup and settle for a 34-yard field to extend the Monarch lead at 25-3.
Finding themselves deep in field position, Lincoln High turned the ball over after a bad snap and Papio's Noah Nohr recovered the ball as it was going into the end zone. Monarchs led 32-3.
Lincoln High's only other score came during crunch time when Dijon Thomas scored on a short 2-yard run with 2:01 remaining before the Monarchs got the ball back and ran out the clock to celebrate their first win of the season.
