- FOOTBALL: Sauberan's 5-TD Performance Sparks Christian Over Concordia
By Jeff Motz
Nathaniel Sauberan managed to find room to run the football Friday night.
The Lincoln Christian junior running back scored five touchdowns as the Crusaders built and early lead and held on for a 58-36 victory over Omaha Concordia at Nebraska Wesleyan's Abel Stadium.
Sauberan's first touchdown came with 19 seconds left in the second quarter, when he broke free for a 46-yard run around left end that put Christian ahead 20-3 at the half. His next touchdown came on the Crusaders' first drive in the second half, when he barreled through the Concordia line for a 2-yard run.
After quarterback Jared Bubak threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Olsen to extend the Christian lead to 32-3 and Concordia's Dakota Hendrickson broke free for a 31-yard scoring strike, Sauberan struck again. He scored on a 40-yard run that put the Crusaders lead at 39-10 with 5:26 left in the third quarter.
Concordia (2-1) returned the favor a minute later with a 49-yard touchdown pass from Tanner Torosian to Jon Greene.
Christian responded with another scoring drive, capped by a Sauberan 31-yard run with 31 seconds left in the third quarter and on the ensuing kickoff, Hendrickson returned the kick 78-yards for a touchdown for Concordia. LCS still led 45-23 after three quarters.
Sauberan's final scoring run came with 11:08 left on a 22-yard scamper to put Lincoln Christian ahead 51-23.
Still, with time running out and the margin was wide, Concordia found a way to respond. Backup quarterback Anthony Tews found receiver Coleman Marion for a 15-yard touchdown. After a Caleb Korte touchdown run to extend Christian's lead late in the game, the Mustangs countered with a scoring drive that ended as the time ran out on a short run into the end zone from Tews.
Bubak finished the opening touchdown drive to give Christian an early 6-0 first quarter lead. He then broke free for a 60-yard score to give the Crusaders a 14-0 lead with 3:38 before halftime.
