- FOOTBALL: Dukes Fly High Over Vikings
By Jeff Motz
WAVERLY---After falling in a nail biter in last week's season opener while hosting Norris, the York Dukes knew a road trip to Waverly would do some good.
And it did.
The Dukes unleashed a running and passing attack while holding off the Vikings from getting off the ground offensively for a 32-3 victory Friday night at Viking Stadium.
Waverly's opening drive of the game stalled, setting up York's first scoring opportunity on a 4-yard run from Jonah Otte for a 7-0 lead.
On the ensuing Viking drive, a 4-yard touchdown pass from Chase Diekmann to John Faughn was called back on a penalty for an ineligible receiver. Waverly then settled for a 21-yard field goal, trailing York 7-3 before the Dukes punched in another touchdown on a 27-yard keeper by quarterback Damon Kaliff, pushing the Dukes to a 14-3 lead.
From there, York took off and kept Waverly out of reach the rest of the game. J.J. Schulz scored on a 12-yard touchdown catch late in the first half for a 21-3 lead.
The Dukes opening drive of the second half stalled and the Vikings quickly went three and out before York's next five-minute drive ended with a 20-yard field goal from Jorre Luther to extend their lead at 24-3.
York wasted no time putting together a 90-yard drive that started in the final two minutes of the third quarter and was capped on a three-yard rushing touchdown from Otte with 9:58 remaining in the game. The Dukes then faked the extra point, with the holder Nic throwing a pass to Evan Ronne in the end zone for the two-point conversion and end the scoring.
Waverly falls to 0-2 and prepares for next Friday night's home game with Omaha Gross at Viking Stadium.
