- FOOTBALL: Curtis' INT Seals Victory For LNE over Links
By Jeff Motz
Derrick Curtis was in the right spot at the right time.
The Lincoln Northeast senior defensive back stayed home when the Rockets were facing a Lincoln High drive late in the game and intercepted a pass with 57 seconds left to secure a 35-31 victory over the Links in the season opening football game at Seacrest Field on Friday afternoon.
As Curtis helped seal the win, it was junior quarterback Trevor Petersen that helped Northeast in the second half rally. Petersen scored on a 4-yard touchdown run with 8:10 left in the game that pulled the Rockets to within a field goal of Lincoln High at 31-28.
A series of penalties forced the Links to punt and Northeast went to work, with Petersen throwing a 17-yard pass to Xavier Haggan and three plays later, Petersen scored on a 4-yard run to put the Rockets in the driver's seat with 2:28 to go in the game.
Lincoln High (0-1) had a solid drive down to the Northeast 22-yard line with a minute left, when quarterback Anthony Evans' pass was picked off by Curtis.
After a 21-21 tie at halftime, the Links got a 26-yard field goal from Jose Perez Blanco and a Isiah Washington fumble recovery led to a two-play drive capped by a 29-yard touchdown reception from Jamie Davis for a 31-21 Lincoln High lead.
Petersen ran for 59-yards and rushing touchdowns, while throwing for 279 yards and an interception. The Rockets got 141 receiving yards and a touchdown from Caden Highsmith, while Haggan had six catches for 92 yards, including a 47-yard reception for a touchdown.
