08/11/2014 - From The Press Box: Football Season Is Here!?!?

 Where did the summer go?

Really, where did it go?   Legion baseball season is done, my vacation to Chicago was over in a flash and now we're talking football already?

Yes, my friends, it's here.  The 2014 football season starts today with fall workouts for all of the high schools across Nebraska.   It marks an important time for people like myself who block out each Friday night during the fall to devote time to covering what is still considered the purest element in all of athletics.

The 2014 high school football season should be full of excitement, as Omaha North will embark on defending their Class A State Championship and relying on their top weapon, running back and Division I prospect Calvin Strong, to bring them back into the playoffs.

Here in Lincoln, the opening weekend will have Southwest and Southeast in the "main event" at Seacrest Field on August 29 at 8pm.   The last several years, the showdown between the Silver Hawks and Knights has been the biggest draw.  Roughly, the average attendance for Southwest/Southeast football game has been around 7,500 or more.

Northeast will open up the Friday, August 29 doubleheader at Seacrest against Lincoln High in the city's oldest football rivalry (73 years strong).  We'll have the game here on LincolnPrepSports.com, starting at 4:20pm.

We'll also carry THE first game of the season on Thursday, August 28 at Seacrest between Omaha Central and Lincoln North Star.  Needless to say, we have planned our schedule out and it looks to have some exciting match ups for you to enjoy.  (Click here:LincolnPrepSports.com Home - Lincoln Nebraska Sports, live broadcast )

As far as prospects, there are several players to keep an eye on.  I mentioned Strong, who is one of the more sought out players by major colleges.  Pierce Almond returns for his senior season at Grand Island, Javier Faalii looks to be a force in the backfield for Southeast and there are many more we plan to see in the next few months who will likely garner for attention among Division I schools.

LincolnMetroSports.com Will Help In Coverage

Last month, LincolnMetroSports.com launched by carrying the State and Regional Legion Baseball tournaments.   The site, which is dubbed the "little brother" to LincolnPrepSports.com, will carry some football games this season featuring Parkview Christian, Raymond Central and Malcolm.

We are keeping LincolnPrepSports.com, though, as our primary source for high school sports information and play-by-play, but LincolnMetroSports.com will step in as an aide to broadening our coverage.

LincolnPrepSports.com will continue to partner up with KFOR 1240 and ESPN 1480 in simulcasting games that I will call for both of those radio stations.  Only a select few games on our broadcast schedule will be simulcast.

A Recap Of My Summer

Well, where do I begin.   Let's see.......there's calling Legion Baseball games......coming out of my "3-year retirement" from fast pitch softball to play for the Palmyra Aces of the Southeast Nebraska League.  Coached my son, Jered, and his friends in YMCA baseball.

Oh, my brother (Central City boys basketball coach Jimmy Motz) got married last month.  There was the trip to Chicago and Wrigley Field to see a Cubs game in person (cross that off the bucket list).  The game we went to on July 29 lasted 16 innings and the Cubs beat the Rockies 4-3.  We stayed through the end of the 7th inning.

While in Chicagoland, enjoyed a deep dish individual pizza from the famed Lou Malnati's and had a "few" sliders from White Castle.  So much for my dieting, huh?

We also went off the beaten bath to explore the Crystal Lake Cave in Dubuque, Iowa and managed to stop by the Walt Disney Museum in Marcelene, Missouri on the way back to Lincoln.  Jami, the kids and myself all enjoyed the four-day trip.

Now, it's back to reality and ahead to another school year.   Start the bus and enjoy the ride!
