05/25/2014 - From The Press Box: Pius X Baseball, Lincoln Area Track Athletes Claim Gold To End Successful School Year

Troy Charf and his Lincoln Pius X baseball team bring home the gold for the second time in three years.

The Thunderbolts clawed their way back into the Class B state championship game to claim their second title in three years, defearting Omaha Skutt on Thursday 7-5.  It marked the third straight time Pius X had made it to the championship game, coming away with the gold in dramatic fashion.

The Utrups (Alex and Brandon) came through when Pius X needed them the most, as did Sam Donlan, Ryne Kortum, Ryan Junker and Michael Helman.  Nolan Hakel swung the bat so well, that his hot hitting streak was a major part of the Thunderbolts' run in the championship round.

Can't forget guys like Colton Abendroth, Nolan Walker and Nolan Meyer, either.  Meyer's two-run homer against Skutt in the championship proved to be a big difference maker.

Ben Raun, Cole Felber, Evan Helman and the rest of the Pius X team are all deserving of being recognized by bouncing back from an early tourney loss to Skutt, only to face them again in the championship at Werner Park and walk away with the hardware.

Pius X and Norris dominated the Lincoln baseball scene in 2014, although Northeast, Southwest and Lincoln High made it to district championship games but failed to qualify for state.

Jerome Ehrlich is riding off into the sunset and stepping down as Northeast's baseball coach.  A search is underway to find his successor.

The Legion Baseball season starts Tuesday and our schedule for the next month is jam packed with regular season games.  July's coverage will consist of only the Junior and Senior Area 5 tournaments.

LINCOLN ATHLETES HAVE SUCCESS AT STATE TRACK MEET

Lincoln Southwest's Steph Ahrens captured gold in the 2014 Class A State Track Meet at Omaha Burke on Saturday.  Ahrens edged out Lincoln Pius X's Maddie Simon to win the 100 meter hurdles.  Ahrens and her Silver Hawk teammates won the Class A girls team title.  While she won gold in the hurdles, Ahrens placed third in the high jump.

Southwest's road to the team title started on Friday, as Nebraska recruit Karlye Cygan won the pole vault with a Class A meet record of 12-feet, 4-inches.

Lincoln Northeast's Toni Tupper capped off her prep career by winning the Class A shot put for the third year in a row.

Lincoln North Star's Jeralyn Poe, who is a three-time state champion cross country runner, won a gold medals in the girls mile and two-mile races.

Moujtaba Mohammed of Lincoln North Star got the Class A and all-class gold medal in the boys half-mile race.

FINAL THOUGHTS

As we close out another school year of activity, I'm proud to say it's wonderful to be covering high school sports in Lincoln.

My duties this year have increased on the radio side and allows me to still be able to provide broadcasts online.   Thanks to John Harris, Max Baker, Reid Kilmer, Dick Janda and Thom Corritore for their added help and support of broadcasting games on this site.

I'm well aware of the new online competitors that are popping up as part of educational tools for schools across the state, but remember one thing, we've been around longer and I firmly believe that our audio play-by-play is accurate and the same as you would hear on a TV or radio broadcast.

One person told me this year that we're watching the game through a webstream that a school started to utilize during football season.  I believe in free enterprise and as long as the schools are still going to allow radio stations and websites like this page to come out and cover games, then we'll be fine.

I have not heard anything negative from Lincoln Public Schools or private schools like Pius X regarding our coverage.   That must be a good thing.

We press on for now.   I leave it to you (the reader, listener and fan) to decide if you read our stories or listen to our play-by-play broadcasts.

If you want to watch a video stream that's 90% of the time just a feed with no play-by-play, that's fine, too.

In the end, many people still prefer to have someone calling the action to find out who has the ball.

I personally thank all of you who visit our site and listen to our broadcasts.  It's made this 10-year venture worthwhile and enjoyable.
