- STATE BASEBALL: Helman Helps Pius X In Victory Over Bennington
By Jeff Motz
PAPILLION---Normally, Michael Helman is the catcher for the Lincoln Pius X baseball team. However, his services on the mound Saturday proved to be worthwhile.
Helman struck out seven batters and only gave up two hits, as the Thunderbolts defeated Bennington 2-0 in the opening round of the NSAA Class B State Baseball Tournament at Werner Park.
Helman also came through at the plate, by singling in the third inning, advancing after Alex Utrup walked and when Colton Abendroth was hit by a pitch. But Sam Donlan's sac fly to center field scored Helman for a 1-0 Thunderbolt lead.
In the sixth, Donlan reached on an error and advanced to second. Ryne Kortum, who was pinch-running for Donlan, would advance on a sacrifice and scored off a single from Nolan Walker.
Helman overcame giving up a two-out hit in the seventh before sealing the win. Pius X will face Omaha Skutt, who earned a 1-0 extra innings victory Saturday night over Seward. Bennington will play the Bluejays in an elimination game Monday at 7pm at Papillion's Fricke Field.
