05/11/2014 - From The Press Box: Pius X Flexes Muscle On Diamond, State Soccer Pairings
It didn't take long Friday night for Lincoln Pius X to show some muscle hitting the ball in their B2 district baseball semifinal game with Blair.

Small ball is the pride and joy for the Thunderbolts and after loading up the bases in the first inning, outfielder Nolan Hakel hit a moonshot to right field.  His grand slam proved to be the deciding factor in the outcome of the game, which saw Pius X won 12-0 in five innings.

Now, the Thunderbolts play in Monday's 6pm B-2 district championship game against Elkhorn South.

The Storm beat Wahoo/Raymond Central/Lincoln Lutheran 11-3 Saturday morning.

What stands out for Pius X, aside from their hitting and small ball play, is their pitching.  Ryan Junker, Ryne Kortum and Sam Donlan are among the pitchers in the rotation that have been very effective this season.  Defensively, Brandon and Alex Utrup have stepped into their roles this season as key players.

The 'Bolts are in the middle of run toward another state tourney appearance.  The last two seasons, Pius X has captured gold or finished second.   The way things are setting up, it could be a Pius X/Norris trilogy if things play out the way everyone is anticipating.

Lincoln Northeast, Lincoln High and Lincoln Southwest are still alive in the district baseball championships that will resume Monday.

The Rockets edged Lincoln East 12-5 on Saturday to advance to the A-3 championship against Omaha Creighton Prep.  It will mark as a rematch of the 2012 Class A championship games, which the Junior Jays won in combined 12 innings of play.

Millard North and Lincoln High will play for a district championship in A-4.  The Links upset Millard South 7-6 on Saturday.  Millard West faces Lincoln Southwest for the A-2 Title.  The Silver Hawks won 3-0 over Lincoln Southeast on Saturday.

Northeast, Lincoln High and Southwest are the final three hopes for Lincoln to have a representative in the Class A tournament that starts Saturday, May 17 at Sherman Field in Lincoln.
