- BASEBALL: McGill's Two Run Hit Lifts Skutt Past Northeast In Marathon
By Jeff Motz
Good pitching and defense kept Lincoln Northeast from allowing Omaha Skutt to score and the Rockets were unable to get any base runners past 2nd base.
But Skutt found a way to get the runners in scoring position and a two-out, two-run single from Justin McGill lifted the SkyHawks to a 2-0 victory over the Rockets in 13 innings Tuesday evening at Sherman Field.
Ty O'Brien singled to start the top of the 13th before stealing second and third and Beau Litz drew a walk and stole second before McGill's single to right field.
Skutt loaded the bases in the first, but left everyone stranded after Northeast pitcher Wyatt Divis recorded the final two outs.
Through seven innings, Divis allowed eight hits and struck out 10 SkyHawk batters. Skutt's Jacob Barton countered with eight strike outs through seven. Reliever Mickey Bassett came in and earned the win after shutting out Northeast in extra innings.
Northeast (6-7) worked Cole Otto and Ryan Garver on the mound in the final innings. The Rockets gave up 13 hits while only connecting on seven hits of their own in the game.
All five pitchers for Northeast and Skutt combined for 26 strikeouts in the game.
