- BASEBALL: Pitching and Hitting Are Key For Silver Hawks In Win Over Knights

Clayton Cope was on target and his Lincoln Southwest teammates were connecting at the plate.
The senior right-hander allowed six hits and struck out seven Lincoln Southeast batters to earn a 6-2 victory Wednesday afternoon at Sherman Field.
Cope only allowed two hits in the first five innings and retired nine straight batters in the second, third and fourth innings. Meanwhile, the Silver Hawks helped out by hitting the ball.
Eli Lovell singled to lead off the third inning and advanced on a wild pitch and sacrifice before scoring off a single by Conor Behrens for a 1-0 Southwest lead. In the fifth, Lovell singled again before advancing on another sacrifice and scored on a ground out by Behrens for a 2-0 Silver Hawk lead.
Senior first baseman David Kaltenberger sparked a four-run, sixth inning for Southwest by leading off with a solo home run to right. Southeast reliever Nolan Hoffman then hit LSW designated hitter Jack Nelson with a pitch before striking out the next two hitters.
Southwest regrouped when Lovell hit an RBI triple and Derek Glen hit a double to drive in another run before Logan Foster hit an RBI triple of his own.
Southeast (1-4) scored their first run in the bottom of the sixth when Taylor Richards reached on a double and scored off a single from Hunter Johnson. Luke Gifford walked and scored off a single from Hoffman in the seventh before the Knights rally was stopped.
Sophomore Noah Kuhlhanek took the loss for Southeast, going 4 and 2/3 innings striking out four and walking three batters, while giving up two earned runs and five hits.
