03/26/2014 - BASEBALL: Pitching, Hitting Help Southeast Over East

By Jeff Motz

Lincoln Southeast proved they could weather the storm with their hitting and pitching Wednesday afternoon.

The Knights took advantage of the gusty south winds blowing out of Den Hartog Field and put the ball in play, while good pitching from sophomore Noah Kuhlhanek shut down Lincoln East hitting and helped Southeast to an 8-1 victory in high school baseball.

It marked the first games of the season for both teams, who didn't play last Thursday because of field and weather conditions.

Southeast (1-0) got hot in the 2nd inning, when rightfielder Luke Gifford led off with a triple to centerfield and eventually scored off a double from Kelvin Bruns for an early 1-0 lead.

The Knights continued to capitalize in the inning.  After a sacrifice fly from Nolan Hoffman, Bruns advanced to third and later scored off a single from Kulhanek.  Austin Urbauer got a double and RBI and later scored off a Hunter Johnson single that followed a Taylor Richards walk.  Then Richards scored on a base hit from Joel Maxwell that gave Southeast a 5-0 lead.

Bruns led off the Southeast half of the third inning with a single and scored off an RBI triple from Kulhanek.  Urbauer would follow that up with an RBI single and scoring off Maxwell's second hit to extend the Knights' lead to 8-0.

Going through two pitchers to start the game, East (0-1) brought in senior left hander Bryce Wilson.  He kept Southeast scoreless the rest of the game by striking out seven batters and allowing only one hit in the final three innings.

The Spartans, on the other hand, couldn't make up for it at the plate.  Nine East batters struck out against Kulhanek and only got three hits.  One of those game from Jon Lyons, who led off the fourth with a single and later scored the team's only run off a single from Justus Stocks.

The meat of the Spartan batting order (Lyons, Brett Mattson and Bryan Reimers) all struck out in the sixth against Kulhanek.

What proved costly were three East errors, two happened in the Southeast half of the second that saw the Knights jump out to an early lead.

Kulhanek earned the win for Southeast, who had their game with Lincoln Pius X on Saturday postponed due to the cold temperatures.
