- BOYS DISTRICT BASKETBALL: HOT SHOOTING HELPS PIUS X EARN STATE TOURNEY BERTH
By Jeff Motz
Lincoln Pius X dictated the tempo and shot the ball near-perfect from the field in the first half that kept Waverly out of reach the rest of the game.
The Thunderbolts shot 92% from the field through the first two quarter for a 14-point lead and held on for a 46-25 victory to capture the B-1 championship and earn a spot in the NSAA Class B Boys State Basketball Tournament.
Pius X (15-7) got a boost from Alex Utrup and Chad Quigley in the second quarter, combining for 15 of the team's 20 points. Quigley hit three, three-pointers; including one right before the buzzer at the end of the second quarter for a 29-15 Pius X lead.
The 'Bolts made 11 of 12 field goals in the first half and took advantage of open looks from the perimeter and drives to the basket against the Viking 1-3-1 zone defense.
Waverly (12-12) was held scoreless for the first five minutes of the third quarter, as Pius broke out to a 8-0 run. Dylan Janecek scored the first Viking basket in the period to temporarily end the run, but the Thunderbolts led 39-19 heading into the final frame.
Utrup and Quigley each scored 12 points to lead Pius X, while Noah Appleget added 11 points. Janecek led all Waverly scorers with nine points.
