01/18/2014 - BOYS BASKETBALL: Links 4th Quarter Momentum Stops Rockets

By Jeff Motz

Jaden Jilg-Brown came through when Lincoln High needed a boost.

The 6-0 Lincoln High junior scored 19 of his 22 points in the second half to lead the Links to a 75-64 victory over Lincoln Northeast Saturday night at the Earl Johnson Activities Building.

In what was a neck and neck game for the first three quarters set up an action packed fourth quarter.

Jason Towery got a layup for a 47-43 Lincoln High lead, then Payton Helmstadter scored on the other end for Northeast and Connor Springman added two free throws to tie game at 47 with 7:00 left.

Jilg-Brown added a three-pointer and Garrett Griffin hit two free-throws for a 52-47 lead with 6:23 remaining.

Lincoln High (8-5) trailed with 5:44 left to play when a scrum for the basketball ended up in what appeared to be a jump ball or a timeout called by Northeast after Springman dove for the ball with Lincoln High's Keshawn Wilson.  The Links bench also called time out.  After a meeting between the coaches, it was ruled by the officials that inadvertent whistle blew and the Links calling time out to retain possession.

Jason Towery was fouled and hit one of two free throws for Lincoln High and a technical foul was assessed to the Northeast bench, which led to a pair of free throws from Wilson and Towery scored on a layup to put the Links ahead 57-47 with 5:06 left.

Helmstadter responded with a layup on the other end and Springman added three free throws to cut the Rocket deficit 57-52 with 4:30 remaining.

Lincoln High started to pull away and got free throws down the stretch and a putback from Jilg-Brown.  He then hit two free throws after he was intentionally fouled and Towery scored underneath on the following possession, extending the Links lead to 66-54 with 2:12 left.  Jilg-Brown hit two more free throws, essentially putting the game away for Lincoln High.

Northeast (5-8) led 16-14 after the first quarter following a layup from Springman.  Lincoln High surged ahead in the second quarter and led at the half 30-26.

Jamie Davis added 16 points for the Links and KeShawn Wilson finished with 15 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter.  The Rockets got a game-high 23 points from Helmstadter and 20 points from Springman in the loss.
